What is the process of rendering services with studios, from start to finish?

How does it work?

1.Brainstorm & general direction

Discussing with a studio about what you are looking for, what kind of render is needed : exterior, streetscape, interior or aerial, etc.

2.Collecting assets

Sending a package including drawings, materials and products info, 3d assets, etc.

3.Grayscale render

Studio will send the first preview of a grayscale render to confirm the model as well as the camera angle*

4.Grayscale review

Client can now review the geometry, camera angles, see if the scene was accurately built, etc.*

*Please note that Grayscale preview stages, presented in stage 3 and 4, are all different, it could be anywhere between 1 to 3 rounds of revisions on average. It depends on the studio’s policy.

5.Color render

Once the modeling stage is approved, the studio will work on the texturing, shading, lighting and some post processing aspects (photoshop).**

6.Color render review

Client can check if the materials information that has been delivered are matching with the color rendering.**

Clients should be aware that most of the time, materials colors and the general look of it can be affected by the lighting set up just like in real life. The material sample you provided will have a different look under the sunlight, ambient light or at different times of the day ( the sky could add an orange, blue, purple, pink tone, etc).

**Please note that the Color rendering preview stage (5 and 6) could repeat for 1 to 3 rounds as well. It also depends on the studios’ policy.

7.Final render

Once the color render is approved, the studio will render a high resolution image in 300dpi, 4k-5k on average. Many studios can also render images in 10k. Discussing with the studio during quoting before starting the project is recommended.

This article breaks down the average process that architectural visualization studios are following but there could be slight discrepancies with some studios. Please double check with the studio prior to the start of your project.
